Idea #1 – More efficient air conditioning

I used to have a blog specifically for ideas. Now I’ll just post a few of them here, even though this isn’t a blog for new inventions, since it’s the blog I actually link to on social media.

Idea #1 is for a more efficient kind of A/C.

It’s designed sort of like a rotary engine, but of course instead of producing energy to perform a function it will consume energy to perform its function. As one piston compresses the coolant to heat it up in the area we’re releasing the heat into, another piston in the area we’re trying to cool down is being pushed the opposite way (further out of the chamber) by the coolant being expanded. The force on the piston caused by the expansion is transferred to the piston currently doing the compression and vice versa to cancel out the forces and make it much easier for both pistons.

I think an ideal version of this should be able to transfer heat with 100% efficiency—that is, not requiring zero energy to run, but requiring the minimum amount theoretically necessary to transfer a given amount of heat.

Maybe due to this efficient design, you can even compress and decompress the air directly, instead of indirectly by using a coolant, with no loss of efficiency. I’m not sure about that because I don’t know the physics of air conditioners well enough.
